The University of Wisconsin, in Madison, WI, hosts John Gaventa (1981) and Loka Ashwood (2024), along with sociologist Gabe Schwartzman, to discuss the changing social and economic conditions of rural America, shifting forms of power, and how they impact citizen engagement. Gaventa and Ashwood bring their unique perspectives from sociology, agriculture, and civic engagement to shed light on how rural America, especially the Appalachian region, has changed over several decades.
